How Your Child Study? Still Using The Same OLD Method You Used Decades Ago?

Alright parents, let us travel back to memory lane here. Remember the time when you are a student back in the 1990s or even 1980s perhaps, how do you actually study for your UPSR, PMR and SPM exams? I bet many would agree with me if I say that we study by reading through thick textbooks and struggling to memorize the entire content. And how many of us actually produce excellent results by using this method?

Let us look at some current figure here. In Wilayah Persekutuan, out of 25,671 students who sat for UPSR exam in 2008, only 2,797 managed to score straight As which is approximately 10.8% only. Those that can score straight As are the excellent students, they pay attention in classroom and if they don’t understand they’ll raise hand and ask. Excellent students have no problem reading through thick textbooks as they can understand the topic well and are able to output it during exams.

Those that fall under the 90% category are either average or weak students. Most of them are not paying good attention in classroom and have no confidence to raise hand and ask questions when they do not understand. So, if your child and belongs to the 90% category and are struggling with the same old method of studying through thick textbooks then you need to STOP it.

Children are individuals who learn in a variety of different ways. The key is to find the way that the child learns best and to supply the child with the tools and skills which help them study in a way that could reduce their stress levels, improve their grades and along with all this give things they wish to do apart from their studies.

Here are some of the tips to help your child to study more effectively:

Take Good Notes And Review It Daily

Brief but compact notes are essential and especially suitable for students wishing to do revision on any subject before practicing on the exercise. And it should be prepared topically. Highlight major topics and subtopics, with the goal of generating an outline of your notes. Even if you take your notes in outline form, this is a good practice. This suggestion is one which we have all heard a thousand times. Unfortunately, most of us never really believe it until we actually try it. Spend 30 minutes or so each evening going over the notes from each topic. Research has shown that reviewing new material within 24 hours of hearing it increases your retention of that material by about 60%. If you want to significantly reduce the time necessary to prepare for exams, this is the way to do it.

Mind Mapping

Studying using mind map is a great way to review topic with a ton of related information, such as science and history. The result is that the remembering process and repeating technique are faster and more effective. Weak and average students would benefit greatly from studying using mind maps and it is an excellent study aid and can make revising for exams easy and fun!

Time Management

Set up a routine for the children to study, at least one hour daily should be dedicated to their study and learning. Whatever the children learn in school that day, should also be revised with the parents at home and any other teacher. This way they will grasp it quicker and will remember it. If parents show interest in their child’s studies, the child will automatically be alert and interested too. Don’t study last minute. It is proven that studying a large amount of material the night before an exam is unproductive. Not only you fail to learn anything, but you also lose sleep.

Motivation & Encouragement

Remember the days when constant shouting of your parents and even cane beatings were not able to motivate you to study. You don’t want your children to have the same problems which you had to suffer because of not studying from the childhood. Motivation and encouragement are important to help them achieve success and confidence in their life. Praise him/her when they bring good grades and encourage them to study. Talk to your child about his/her likes, dislikes, and the subjects, which he/she finds easy or difficult. Keep the flow of communication open between you and your child. It will help you keep a tab on his/her studies. Studying doesn’t just mean completing homework. So instead of allotting time for completing the homework, allot time for studying.

Identify Parents' Common Problems ->Solve it Together

Are you having the same problems most parents are facing? Speak to any parent you know and you’ll find out the most common problems that are plaguing them besides parenting issues is none other than their child’s education. On one hand parents are working hard to save for their child’s education fees and on the other hand they have to ensure that their child excel academically. The strive for academic excellence starts from as young as when the child is in primary one and some even from pre-school level.

Here I’m going to list down 4 common problems that most parents are facing and the solutions to it.

Problem # 1 : Not able to APPRAISE child’s academic progress

Most parents are unable to have a good grasp of what their child learn at school. This is tough because the current syllabus is totally different from what the parents have studied in yesteryears.

Solution # 1 :

Use a system which incorporates a revision module that allows students do short regular exercises and provides instant Output Learning to assess a student’s level of understanding of a particular topic taught in school. Students can select a particular topic taught in class that day and instantly find out if they have understood what they have learnt and review their understanding of that topic. Parents will be able to monitor their children’s academic progress and help them identify their children’s strength and weaknesses so that timely measures can be taken to correct any shortcomings.

Problem # 2 : Too BUSY to monitor or supervise child’s revision or homework

It is becoming increasingly difficult for working parents especially to constantly monitor their children’s revision or homework. Many parents resort to sending their children to day care / tuition centre for a helping hand. The downside is that these day care / tuition centre are lacking of a systematic reporting system.

Solution # 2 :

Parents need a monitoring chart that allows them to keep track of their children’s performances. The system has to come with an effective monitoring tool that is designed to keep parents informed of their children’s work schedule, ensuring parents that their children exercises are done and completed accordingly. Parents would be updated on the number of attempts their children has done on each topic, thus specifically highlighting the “difficult topics” faced by their children. This information will help parents identify specific topics in a subject that their children have difficulties in, instead of generalising and categorising weaknesses by subjects.

Problem # 3 : You only know your child’s result when they bring home report card > TOO LATE

Most parents can only tell their children to work hard in the next term if the exam results for the current term are unsatisfactory. Many are unable to have a preview of their children’s strong and weak subjects before exam.

Will it be better if you would identify their weakness earlier than waiting to the mid year to receive their report cards? Then only you take action to seek for solutions for your child?

Solution # 3 :

Use a system to give you unprecedented 1st hand knowledge of your children’s strong and weak subjects. It records and displays your children’s average scores for each subject for that month. You can also check on previous months’ results to compare the difference.

Only a proven system can give you a review your children’s performances & identify weakness so that timely measures can be taken to correct whatever deficiency before the actual exam takes place.

Problem # 4 : Not satisfied with exam results - NOT GOOD Enough!

Let’s face it. The percentage of excellent students are only 10% or less which means out of 100 students only 8 to 10 that can really produce excellent results in exams. A review on the strategies adopted by these excellent students has shown that  2 to 3 months before actual exam, they have intensively attempted at least 7-10 years of past years exam paper.

Solution # 4 :

Use a system that allows students sitting for national examinations to practice on actual past years’ examination papers. Each exam paper is set exactly the same as the actual examination paper format and students have the options to select questions either by “year” or by “random” and have to complete all exercises within the time allocated. This allows students countless examination practices thus helps and condition students to be exam ready and Score A’s in the real examinations.

Problems Faced by Most Children in Learning

Student need to study the thick textbooks and struggling to memorize the entire content. After a lot of input from the school, they go for tuition for another input session. In the end, they are tired from school and tuition. 

Problems faced by 21st Century Children in Learning

• Tonnes of information taking in daily by the student, but 
• without effective input and effective practice, student tend to forgot what they learned.
